Trains Across America…Hell on Wheels

I’m sure this may be old news because the series “Hell on Wheels” has been through five (5) seasons. My wife and I finally discovered it on Netflix and AMC! Notwithstanding our tardiness to the party, I have to say that “Hell on Wheels” attempts to depict the difficulties experienced by those building the Trans-Continental Railroad. The series was very enjoyable. For those familiar with America history, you might even see some resemblance to reality (e.g., the amount paid by the U.S. Government to rail companies building track was $1,600 per mile and that is the figure used in the “Hell on Wheels” series). You can experience laying track, driving spikes, filling the bed with ballast and loads of other things.

Here’s a description of the series from AMC’s website: “The Civil War is in the past, but former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon can’t put it behind him. Fresh are the horrific memories of the death of his wife, killed at the hands of the Union soldiers, an act that sets Bohannon on a course of revenge. This contemporary Western tells the story of his journey, a story that rides on Union Pacific’s construction of the first transcontinental railroad. Bohannon’s westward travels take him to a lawless melting pot of a town called “Hell on Wheels,” which moves with the construction of the railroad.”

Watch and enjoy the many episodes in the five (5) season run of “Hell on Wheels”, but five (5) seasons is all you get. Some of us train fans might have wanted more!
